The first dose of COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer (NYSE:PFE)/ BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) and AstraZeneca (NASDAQ:AZN) is 86.6% effective in preventing infections in those aged 60 and older, an analysis of real-world data from South Korea has indicated.
The study conducted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency ("KDCA) has shown that the efficacy rates of Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines in preventing COVID-19 were 89.7% and 86.0%, respectively at least after two weeks from the first dose.
The data from more than 3.5M South Korean aged 60 and older were used in the analysis conducted over two months since February.
Out of those, 521,133 people have received the first shot of either Pfizer/BioNTech or AstraZeneca vaccines. Yet they accounted only for 29 cases out of 1,237 total COVID-19 cases in the sample.
It is shown that both vaccines provide a high protection against the disease after the first dose. (People) should get full vaccinations according to recommended schedule, as the protection rate will go up further after a second dose, Reuters quoted KDCA as saying."
